How did you get started?

After seeing my first race at Laguna Seca in Oct of 1964, I went to as many races in the area as I could as a spectator (I was in the Air Force at the time and stationed at Castle AFB in Merced). I finally talked to a Corner Marshal over the fence at Laguna and asked how do I get to be on your side of the fence? He gave me the phone number of the Chief Turn Marshal, Marty Illgen and I called him to sign up. I think my first race was at Cotati, but I can’t be sure. I eventually joined in 1966, because back then you could work as a member of USARM, and their dues were cheaper.

What is your current position?

Currently I am the assistant Chief Starter to Marcia Elise. I am also the Chairman of the San Francisco Region Hall of Fame (HOF) Committee. I have held this position since 2006 when then Regional Executive R. J. Gordy asked me to head up the HOF Committee. That first year we inducted 10 people into the Hall of Fame.

What do you like about the SCCA?

The people. As they say – you come for the races, but you stay for the people. Everyone is there to help put on the race, but the social is where you get to meet everyone else your not working with directly.

What does your role involve?

As assistant starter chief, I help Marcia with our weekend crew assignments, If Marcia is unable to be there as chief for the day or weekend, I become chief and become responsible to ensure we get our job done.

What don’t people know about you? 

I was a Divisional Administrator for Race Control under Roger Eandi for 10 years. I have served on the SCCA National Hall of Fame (HOF) Nominating Committee for 4 years and at present I’m serving my last of 4 years on the Legacy Committee as it’s Chairman. 

What does the Hall of Fame Nominating Committee do?

The SCCA National HOF is actually divide into 4 separate committees. They are: the Steering Committee which oversees the other 3 committees with direction on procedure and if there are conflicts between committees about pending nominees.
